SECOND SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

INTROIT

Factus est Dominus (Psalm 18)

The Lord was my upholder, He brought me forth also into a place of liberty. He brought me forth, Even because he had a favour unto me. § I will love thee, O Lord, my strength: The Lord is my stony rock, my defence, and my Saviour. Glory be ... As it was ... (Repeat to §.)

COLLECT

O Lord, who never failest to help and govern those whom thou dost bring up in thy stedfast fear and love: keep us, we beseech thee, under the protection of thy good providence, and make us to have a perpetual fear and love of thy holy Name. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect 2 of the Saints, as given after Trinity Sunday.  Collect 3 ad lib.  But if the Octave of the Sacred Heart be kept, only two Prayers are said, and Collect 2 is of the Octave.

COLLECT 2 Of the Saints

Defend us, O Lord, we beseech thee, from all dangers both of body and soul: and at the intercession of the blessed and glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of blessed Joseph, of thy holy Apostles Peter and Paul, of blessed N., and of all thy saints, grant us thy saving health and peace; that being defended from all adversities and all false doctrines, thy Church may serve thee in freedom and quietness. Through the same.

THE EPISTLE

1 John 3.13-24

Do not wonder, brethren, that the world hates you. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. Any one who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But if any one has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth. By this we shall know that we are of the truth, and reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. All who keep his commandments abide in him, and he in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given us.

GRADUAL AND ALLELUIA

(Psalm 120) When I was in trouble I called upon the Lord: And he heard me. Deliver my soul, O Lord, From lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.

Alleluia. Alleluia. (Psalm 7) O Lord, my God, in thee have I put my trust: Save me from them that persecute me, and deliver me.  Alleluia.

THE GOSPEL

Luke 14.16-24

At that time: [Jesus] said to [one of those who sat at table with him], "A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many; and at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, `Come; for all is now ready.' But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, `I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, `I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, `I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' So the servant came and reported this to his master. Then the householder in anger said to his servant, `Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.' And the servant said, `Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.' And the master said to the servant, `Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.'"
