Mass 8.  For Several Martyrs

INTROIT

Salus autem.  Psalm 37.

But the salvation of the righteous cometh of the Lord:
Who is also their strength in the time of trouble.  §

Fret not thyself because of the ungodly:
Neither be thou envious of the evildoers.
Glory be ...
As it was ...

COLLECT

O God, which makest us glad with the yearly festival of blessed N. and N., thy holy Martyrs: grant, we beseech thee, that as we do rejoice in their merits; so we may be enkindled to follow them in all virtuous and godly living.  Through.

THE LESSON

Hebrews 10.32 – 38

Brethren, Call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;   Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.   For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.   Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward.   For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.   For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.   Now the just shall live by faith.

GRADUAL

(Psalm 34) The righteous cry and the Lord heareth them:
And delivereth them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a contrite heart:
And will save such as be of an humble spirit.
Alleluia.
Alleluia.
The noble army of Martyrs praise thee, O Lord.
Alleluia.

After Septuagesima, instead of the Alleluia, and verse following, is said:

TRACT

(Psalm 126) They that sow in tears, shall reap in joy.
He that now goeth on his way weeping, and beareth forth good seed.
He shall doubtless come again with joy,
And bring his sheaves with him.

THE GOSPEL

St. Matthew 24.3 – 13

At that time: As Jesus sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?  And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.   For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.   And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.   For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.   All these are the beginning of sorrows.   Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.   And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.   And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.   And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.   But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

After Septuagesima Alleluia at the end of the following Offertory is omitted, but otherwise it is said through the year.

OFFERTORY  Wisdom 3

The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there shall no torment touch them: in the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: but they are in peace, (alleluia).

SECRET

We beseech thee, O Lord, mercifully to accept these our oblations: that at the intercession of thy holy Martyrs N. and N. we may by thee be defended against all adversities.  Through.

COMMUNION  St. Matthew 10
