INTROIT
Intret in conspectu. Psalm 79.
O Let the sorrowful sighing of the prisoners come before
thee, O Lord:
Reward thou our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom:
Let the vengeance of thy servants' blood that is shed
Be openly shewed upon the heathen. §
O God the heathen are come into thine inheritance, thy holy
temple have they defiled:
And made Jerusalem an heap of stones.
Glory be ...
As it was ...
Protect us, O Lord, we beseech thee: who observe the feast of blessed N. and
N., thy holy Martyrs and Bishops; and grant that by their meritorious
supplication we may ever find favour in thy sight. Through.
If they were not Bishops the Collect is said as in the
Mass following.
THE LESSON
Wisdom 3.1 – 8
The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there shall no torment
touch them. In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: and their
departure is taken for misery, And their going from us to be utter
destruction: but they are in peace. For though they be punished in
the sight of men, yet is their hope full of immortality. And having
been a little chastised, they shall be greatly rewarded: for God proved them,
and found them worthy for himself. As gold in the furnace hath he
tried them, and received them as a burnt offering. And in the time
of their visitation they shall shine, and run to and fro like sparks among the
stubble. They shall judge the nations, and have dominion over the
people, and their Lord shall reign for ever.
GRADUAL
(Exodus 15) The Lord is glorious in holiness:
Fearful in praises, doing wonders.
Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power:
Thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy.
Alleluia.
Alleluia.
(Ecclesiasticus 44) The bodies of the Saints are buried in
peace:
But their name liveth for ever.
All: Alleluia.
After Septuagesima, instead of the Alleluia, and
verse following, is said:
TRACT
(Psalm 126) They that sow in tears, shall reap in joy.
He that now goeth on his way weeping, and beareth forth good seed.
He shall doubtless come again with joy,
And bring his sheaves with him.
THE GOSPEL
St. Luke 21.9 – 19
At that time: Jesus unto his disciples: When ye shall hear of wars and
commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the
end is not by and by. Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise
against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: And great earthquakes
shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and
great signs shall there be from heaven. But before all these, they
shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the
synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my
name's sake. And it shall turn to you for a testimony.
Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall
answer: For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your
adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. And ye shall be
betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of
you shall they cause to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of
all men for my name's sake. But there shall not an hair of your head
perish. In your patience possess ye your souls.
After Septuagesima Alleluia at the end of the following Offertory is omitted, but otherwise it is said through the year.
OFFERTORY Psalm 68
O God, wonderful art thou in thy Saints: even the God of Israel, he will give
strength and power unto his people, blessed be God, (alleluia).
SECRET
Assist us mercifully, O Lord, in these our supplications which we make before
thee in remembrance of thy Saints: that we who trust not in our own
righteousness may be succoured by the merits of them that have found favour in
thy sight. Through.
COMMUNION Wisdom 3
For though they be punished in the sight of men, yet hath God proved them: as
gold in the furnace hath he tried them, and received them as a burnt offering.
POSTCOMMUNION
O Lord, who hast vouchsafed to feed us with these saving mysteries: grant
that, as on this day we do honor to thy Saints, so we may be succoured by their
intercession. Through.
