Mass 4.  For a Martyr Not a Bishop

INTROIT

In virtute tua.  Psalm 21

The righteous shall rejoice in thy strength, O Lord:
Exceeding glad shall he be in thy salvation: thou hast given him his heart's desire.  §

For thou hast prevented him with the blessings of goodness:
And hast set a crown of pure gold upon his head.
Glory be ...
As it was ...

COLLECT

Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God: that we, who this day keep the heavenly birthday of blessed N. thy holy Martyr, may by his prayers be stablished in the love of thy holy Name.  Through.

THE LESSON

Wisdom 10.10 – 14

The Lord guided the righteous in right paths, shewed him the kingdom of God, and gave him knowledge of holy things, made him rich in his travels, and multiplied the fruit of his labors.  In the covetousness of such as oppressed him he stood by him, and made him rich.  He defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait, and in a sore conflict she gave him the victory; that he might know that goodness is stronger than all.  When the righteous was sold, he forsook him not, but delivered him from sin: he went down with him into the pit,  And left him not in bonds, till he brought him the scepter of the kingdom, and power against those that oppressed him: as for them that had accused him, he shewed them to be liars, and gave him perpetual glory.

GRADUAL

(Psalm 112) Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord:
He hath great delight in his commandments.
His seed shall be mighty upon earth:
The generation of the faithful shall be blessed.
Alleluia.
Alleluia.
(Psalm 21) Thou hast set a crown of pure gold upon his head.
Alleluia.

After Septuagesima, instead of the Alleluia, and verse following, is said:

TRACT

(Psalm 21) Thou hast given him his heart's desire:
And hast not denied him the request of his lips.
For thou hast prevented him with the blessings of goodness.
Thou hast set a crown of pure gold upon his head.

THE GOSPEL

St. Matthew 10.34  – 42

At that time: Jesus unto his disciples:  Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.  For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.   And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.   He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.   And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.   He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.   He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.   He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.   And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

OFFERTORY  Psalm 8

Thou hast crowned him with glory and worship: and hast made him to have dominion of the works of thy hands, O Lord.

SECRET

We beseech thee, O Lord, graciously to accept these our prayers and oblations: that we being cleansed by these heavenly mysteries may obtain of thy great mercy the fulfillment of all our desires.  Through.

COMMUNION  St. Matthew 16

If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his Cross and follow me.

POSTCOMMUNION

Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord our God: that like as we in this life do gladly honor the memory of thy Saints, so we may in heaven rejoice in their eternal fellowship.  Through.
