INTROIT
Liberatur (Psalm 18)
Priest: It is he that delivereth me from my cruel enemies: and
setteth me up above my adversaries:
People: Thou shalt rid me from the wicked man, O Lord. §
Priest: I will love thee, O Lord, my strength:
People: The Lord is my stony rock, and my defence, and my Saviour.
O merciful God, we beseech thee to sanctify this our fasting to the enlightenment of the hearts of thy faithful people: that we, to whom thou hast given an hearty desire to pray, may obtain of thy loving-kindness the fulfillment of all our petitions. Through.
COLLECT 2 Of Ash Wednesday
ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that
thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create
and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and
acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy,
perfect remission and forgiveness. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. [Who.]
THE LESSON
Leviticus 19.10-19
In those days: The Lord spake unto Moses, saying: Speak unto all the
congregation of Israel, saying: I am the Lord your God. Ye shall not
steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another. And ye shall not
swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am
the Lord. Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages
of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the
morning. Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before
the blind, but shalt fear thy God: I am the Lord. Ye shall do no
unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor
honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy
neighbour. Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people:
neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the
Lord. Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any
wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. Thou shalt not
avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt
love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord. Ye shall keep my
statutes. For I am the Lord your God.
GRADUAL
Priest: (Psalm 30) I will magnify thee, O lord, for thou hast
set me up:
People: And hast not made my foes to triumph over me.
Priest: O Lord my God, I cried unto thee:
People: And thou hast healed me:
Priest: Thou, Lord, hast brought my soul out of hell,
People: Thou hast kept my life from them that go down to the pit.
TRACT
Priest: (Psalm 103) O Lord, deal not
with us after our sins:
People: Nor reward us according to our
wickedness.
Priest: (Psalm 79) Lord, remember not
our old sins, but have mercy upon us,
People: And that soon, for we are come to
great misery.
ALL GENUFLECT
Priest: Help us, O God of our
salvation,
People: For the glory of thy Name, O Lord
Priest: O deliver us and be merciful unto
our sins,
People: For thy Name’s sake.
THE GOSPEL
St. John 10.22-38
At that time: It was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it
was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch. Then
came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to
doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. Jesus answered them, I told
you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear
witness of me. But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I
said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow
me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish,
neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave
them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my
Father's hand. I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones
again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you
from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered
him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because
that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. Jesus answered them, Is it not
written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto
whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; Say ye of
him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest;
because I said, I am the Son of God? If I do not the works of my Father,
believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works:
that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.
