Saturday after Ash Wednesday

INTROIT

Audivit Dominus (Psalm 30)

Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me:
Lord, be thou my helper.  §

I will magnify thee, O Lord, for thou hast set me up:
And not made my foes to triumph over me.
Glory be ...
As it was ...

THE COLLECT

Assist us mercifully, O Lord, in these our supplications: and grant that, like as this fast hath been ordained for the healing of our bodies and our souls, so we may in all godliness and lowliness observe the same.  Through.

COLLECT 2 Of Ash Wednesday

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. [Who.]

COLLECT 3  Of the Saints

Defend us, O Lord, we beseech thee, from all dangers both of body and soul: and at the intercession of thy blessed and glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of blessed Joseph, of thy holy Apostles Peter and Paul, of blessed N., and of all thy Saints, grant us thy saving health and peace; that being defended from all adversities and all false doctrines, thy Church may serve thee in all freedom and quietness.  (Through.)

THE LESSON

Isaiah 58.9-14

Thus saith the Lord God:  If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;  And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:  And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.  And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.  If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:  Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

GRADUAL

(Psalm 27) One thing have I desired of the Lord, which I will require,
Even that I may dwell in the house of the Lord.
To behold the fair beauty of the Lord,
And to visit his temple.

THE GOSPEL

St. Matthew 6.47-56

At that time: When even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.  And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.  But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:  For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.   And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.   For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.   And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.   And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him,   And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.   And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the reets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.

OFFERTORY  Psalm 119

Quicken me, O Lord,  according to thy word: that I may know thy testimonies.

SECRET

O Lord, who of thy goodness hast vouchsafed to ordain this sacrifice for the propitiation of our sins: we beseech thee that thou wouldest graciously receive the same; that the thoughts of our hearts, being cleansed by its operation, may be made an oblation acceptable inthy sight.  Through.

SECRET 2  Of Ash Wednesday

Grant, we beseeh thee, O Lord, that like as we do by these our oblations bring to remembrance the institution of this holy Sacrament, so we may by thee be enabled to offer the same according to thy will.  Through.

SECRET 3  Of the Saints

Graciously hear us, O God of our salvation, and by the power of this Sacrament defend us from all dangers both of body and soul: granting us in this world the succour of thy grace, and in the world to come life everlasting.  (Through).

COMMUNION  Psalm 2

Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice unto him with reverence: take hold of discipline, lest ye perish from the right way.

POSTCOMMUNION

O Lord, who hast here vouchsafed to quicken us with thy gift of heavenly life: grant, we beseech thee, that those things, which in this present life we do receive in a mystery, may be our succour unto life eternal.  Through.

POSTCOMMUNION 2  Of Ash Wednesday

We beseech thee, Lord, mercifully to protect us who have now received this holy Sacrament: that this our fast may be acceptable in thy sight, and profitable unto us for the healing of our souls.  Through.

POSTCOMMUNION 3  Of the Saints

Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord, that the gifts now offered by us in these holy mysteries may evermore cleanse and defend us: that at the intercession of the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of blessed Joseph, of thy holy Apostles Peter and Paul, of blessed N., and of all thy Saints, we may be absolved from all our offences and defended against al adversities.  (Through.)

Over the people.

Let us pray.  Bow down before the Lord.

COLLECT

Strengthen, O Lord, we pray thee, with these thy gifts the wills of thy faithful that we receiving the same may seek them more earnestly, and seeking the same may obtain them everlastingly.  Through.
