THE EPISTLE

Isaiah 2.2-5

In those days: Isaiah the Prophet spake, saying: It shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.   And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.   And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.   O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

COLLECT

Arise, O Lord, we pray thee: and delay not to bestow upon us the succour of thy heavenly might;that they, which put their trust and confidence in thy mercy may be succoured by the comfort of thy coming.  Who livest and reignest with the father.

COLLECT 2  Of Advent

ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal.  Through the same Jesus Christ thy Son, our Lord.  Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.  Amen.

COLLECT 3  Of Saint Mary

O GOD, who didst vouchsafe that thy Word should be made flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the message of an Angel: grant to us thy humble servants ; that we, believing her to be indeed the Mother of God, may by her intercession find favour in thy sight. Through the same Jesus Christ thy Son, our Lord.  Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.  Amen.

OR

COLLECT 3 For those about to be ordained

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who hast purchased to thyself an universal Church by the precious blod of thy dear Son: mercifully look upon the same, and at this time so guide and govern the minds of thy servants the Bishops and Pastors of thy flock, that they may lay hands suddenly on no man, but faithfully and wisely make choice of fit persons, to serve inthe sacred Ministry of thy Church.  And to those who shall be ordained to any holy function, give thy grace and heavenly benediction; that both by their life and doctrine they may shew forth thy glory, and set forward the salvation of all men.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord.  [Who.]

THE EPISTLE

Isaiah 7.10-15

In those days: the Lord spake again unto Ahaz, saying:  Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above. But Ahaz said: I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord.  And he said: Hear ye now, O house of David: Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?  Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel. Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

GRADUAL

Priest:   (Psalm 145) The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him:
People:   Yea, all such as call upon him faithfully.
Priest:   My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord:
People:   And let all flesh give thanks unto his holy Name.

THE GOSPEL

St. Luke 1.26-38a

At that time: The Angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a Virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the Virgin's name was Mary.  And the Angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.  And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.  And the Angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.  And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.  He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:  And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.  Then said Mary unto the Angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?  And the Angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.  And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.  For with God nothing shall be impossible.  And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.

OFFERTORY

Isaiah 35

Be strong and fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance; even God with a recompence: he will come and save you.

SECRET

We beseech thee, O Lord, that this our fast may be acceptable in thy sight: that we, being cleansed and made worthy of thy grace may obtain the promise of everlasting life which thouh hast given us in thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.  Who liveth and reigneth with Thee.

SECRET 2  Of Advent

Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord, that the effectual power of these thy holy mysteries may in such wise cleanse us from all our iniquities that we may in all purity attain unto him who is the author of the same, even Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord.  Who liveth and reigneth with thee.

SECRET 3  Of Saint Mary

We beseech thee, O Lord, stablish in our hearts the mysteries of thy true religion: that, as we do believe thy Son, conceived of a virgin, to be very God and very man, so by the power of his resurrection we may be found worthy to attain to everlasting felicity.  (Through the same.)

COMMUNION Isaiah 7

Behold, a Virgin shall conceive and bear a Son: and his Name shall be called Emmanuel.

POSTCOMMUNION

O Lord, who hast vouchsafed to bestow upon us the healing gifts of thy bounty: grant, we beseech thee, that, like as we do rejoice in the partaking of the same, so they may inwardly be profitable to the renewing of our souls.  Through.

POSTCOMMUNION 2  Of Advent

Grant to us, O Lord, we beseech thee: so to wait for thy loving kindness in the midst of thy Temple, that in readiness of heart and mind we may hail the coming feast of our redemption.  Through.

POSTCOMMUNION 3  Of Saint Mary

We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts: that as we have known the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an Angel; so by his cross and passion we may be brought to the glory of his resurrection.  (Through the same.)
